Good afternoon everyone,

A good week for golf at the club, plenty of sunshine certainly helps, especially if you like lots of run on your golf ball!

Sorry for the mix up last week, hence you got a newsletter with no news!

Club news

Plenty to report as events are coming thick and fast, so I will start with England V Rest of the world match which was played on Sunday 28th August, a great response with England Captain Peter Kilford and ROW Captain Shaun McGowan fielding 22 aside.

Match 1 went England's way as Pete and I beat Shaun and Alan Pestell 3&2, the highlight was certainly Petes 2 at 16 to close the match out.

Match 2 also went England's way as Nick Stewart and Andy Craig beat Kevin Walder and Bernie De Souza 2up.

Match 3 went to ROW as Roy Buck and Rohan Bhatia beat President Peter Killick and Paul Sawyers.

Match 4 saw Keith Jeffcoat and Brian Smith destroy Alan Brooks and Dave Paterson, England now led 3-1 and only needed 3 points to secure victory

Team Bhatia kept ROW alive with wins for Priya and Steve Rowe, Deepak and Russ Thompson and with Gordon Mackie's 4 foot/2 foot putt (depending who you ask) slipping by against Neil Todd and Daz Field for a halved match it stood at Eng. 5 1/2 ROW 4 1/2 with one match to play.

Henry
Semmance sent his ball for a swim but his partner Mari Brooks put her shot into the middle of the green as did opponents team Ahmad, Henry left his putt woefully short allowing Sharon to lag her putt to the hole side and secure a 6 1/2 4 1/2 victory for England.

A lovely 3 course meal followed, which rounded off a great bank holiday weekend.

Competition news

Presidents Platter and Scratch Bowl

60+ players turned out for the 36 hole event on Sunday, for both The Presidents Platter (handicap) and Scratch bowl (scratch). After round one Matt Hervey led the way in both the platter and the bowl with gross 68 nett 66, he was closely followed by Darren Field with nett 67 and several players on nett 69. In the bowl Matt led by 2 from Ben Church and Mark Haffenden, with Conor Byers and Nathan Brown a further 2 shots back.

After being watered by Peter Killick at lunchtime, round 2 commenced. Leader Matt Hervey slipped to gross 75 nett 73 for 143/139, Dean White scored another nett 69 to match his morning score and lead the platter with 138, both these 2 led for most of the afternoon until in the last group Ben Church shot 69 nett 68 for gross 139 nett 137 to win both The Platter and the Bowl by a single shot in each.

Presidents Platter
Ben Church 69+68 = 137
Dean White 69+69 = 138
Matt Hervey 66+73 = 139

Scratch Bowl
Ben Church 70+69 = 139
Mark Haffenden 70+70 =140
Matt Hervey 68+75 = 143

Club teams

Scratch Team After the thrilling victory in The Perman Shield against Sundridge Park, the scratch team were away at Chislehurst in the league, wins from Conor Byers, Alfie Hickman/Kent Osborne, Matt Hervey/Stuart Williams, Ross Mackie/Calum Abbott and a half from Mark Haffenden saw LPGC win 4 1/2 - 1 1/2 away from home, good result team!

Ladies news

Having beaten Wrotham Heath 4/1 last Monday at Langley, the ladies needed to win 2 matches in the away leg. This was played at Wrotham Heath on Sunday 28 August and lost 3/2 but we managed the vital '2 wins' from Sarah Miller 5/3 and Ann Greatorex 5/4 - and are now in the final! This takes place on Sunday 18 September at Canterbury Golf Club and will be against Sene Valley. Very well done to our team and let's hope we all play well in the final and our putts drop!

Ladies Medal

On a very humid Tuesday, the ladies played their medal competition. In Division One Sarah Miller took top spot with nett 76, on ahead of Barbara Malongone and Penny Forrest. Serial winner Debbie Pestell again in Division Two with nett 77, one clear of Maddie Simmons and Sue Tester and likewise in Division Three the familiar name of Catherine Loddo was at the top with the day's best score of nett 74 with Ruth Smith in second spot.

Junior news

Alfie Hickman is Langley Park Junior Club Champion for 2016

Scores of 73+74 were good enough to take this year's event, Alfie will receive his trophy at a The Presentation Evening later in the year.

Pro Am

Captain Peter Kilford and I played in the PGA Captain/Pro Challenge at The Addington last Thursday, a big event in the PGA Calendar with the winners from the 12 regional qualifiers all going through to a grand final in Spain later in the year.

We got off to a poor start and didn't find a great deal of rhythm for the first nine holes and most of the damage was done. We did, however, perform better on the back nine although it wasn't too hard to improve on our front nine performance to finish with a better ball score of 70; 7 shots off the pace and a mid-table finish.

The following day, I played with President Peter Killick and past Captains Allan Brooks and John Newton in The Kent Captains Society Pro Am at West Kent. We were on of the early starters and set off at a blistering pace and reached the turn in -9. A slightly slower back nine of -7 saw us clubhouse leaders with Sittingbourne on -16, a field of 40 teams were competing so we returned to LPGC and hoped for the best, we were eventually beaten into 4th place with Hempstead Forrest winning on -19, Ashford -18, Sittingbourne -16 Langley Park -16... If only John Newton hadn't missed those short putts!
