Good afternoon everyone,
Augusta's Back Nine
A definite change in temperature this week, sunshine and mild, almost feels like a spring day, almost. As we approach the middle of February, thoughts will soon start to turn to the first major of the year, The Masters at Augusta, Jordan Spieth is currently favourite after his performance last week, but how do you think you would get on? Come and find out, from now until Masters Sunday we will be holding a stableford event from the members tees on the back nine of Augusta, it's very realistic, including the changes in elevation and sloping greens, £5 per person entry fee, you can play as many times as you wish, winner takes all, can Darren Field get 24 points round here?....I doubt it... Here's my attempt at playing the par 3 12th hole.
February Stableford
Last weekend saw the February stableford played, 110 keen competitors teed it upon tricky conditions, leading the way in Division One was James Grannell with 38 points, he was two clear of new member Paul Myers , with Mike Parr a further point back in third with 35.
In Division two, the best score of the day came from Steve Clarke with 39 points, he was four clear of second placed Mark Stockford, with Mike Fletcher in third with 34. There were eight players recording two's, if you were one of the fortunate ones, it was worth £27.50 per two which has been added to your pro shop account.
Ladies Waltz
The ladies played a team stableford waltz on Tuesday, the rules to this event is one, two, three, one, two, three, one score at the first, two scores at the second, three scores at the third and repeat.
The leading team with 61 points was Mary Forrest, Maureen Lacy and Sharon Jagger , closely followed by Pat Stubbs, Sally Meighan and Julie Allen on 60 with Sue Tester, Pauline Emburey and Chitra Prashar a further point back on 59 points.
I dusted the clubs off for their first competitive outing of 2017, playing in the Sunshine Pro Am in Portugal, two rounds at Laranjal, two at Quinta South and one at Monte Rei, being a five round event we are able to drop the worst of our first four rounds.
Things started brightly at Laranjal with a steady 70 (-2), followed by a 74 (+2) at Monte Rei, and then a very poor 75 at Quinta South, I then had a very yo-yo round at Laranjal with included two doubles, three bogeys and seven birdies for a very relaxing level par 72. This put me in fifth place going into the final round at Quinta, unfortunately torrential rain over the first seven holes saw the final round abandoned and a share of fifth place.
