A great success!

Many thanks to all of you who supported Pro’s Day! Last year I changed the format from individual stableford to a team Texas Scramble, which has been a great success. This year 18 teams played in glorious sunshine in the morning, but the 19 teams who played in the afternoon were not quite so lucky, with two quick downpours sandwiched by sunshine. However, the day still went according to plan.

Sarah Miller shoots the lowest score of the day

Last week’s ladies results were released after the newsletter went to press, so apologies for the late news, but in The Ladies Medal/Golf Foundation Brooch, Sarah Miller returned the lowest score of the day with nett 72 to beat Sue Tester on countback and Chitra Prashar by two in Division 1. Angeli Khanna once again took the top spot in Division 2 with nett 73, one ahead of Janice Pottage and 2 ahead of Monica Whelan, in division 3 the top honours went to Sharon Ahmad with nett 77 on ahead of Vicky Mitchell and Diana Stotesbury.

A strong home performance

The form of the Vets League team continues to improve, as a fine home performance against Sundridge Park resulted in a 5.5-0.5 thrashing, with wins from Truelove/Cullum, Battle/Carter, Perry/Dicken, Newton/Hayward, Sharpe/Webb and a half from Killick/Peach.

Fingers crossed for a strong finish to the season!

Jack Hoopers is this year's Champion

The Juniors played their annual Rumpole Vase last week, which is a 4 round medal event. With scores of nett 66-71-67-68 Jack Hooper was this year’s Champion, one shot clear of Stephen Barrett (72-67-69-65) and Ethan Murphy (75-65-68-65). In the Junior Plate, Jonny Thompson was the eventual winner with stableford scores of 30 + 34, 5 clear of second placed Freddie Goodliffe 34+25.

The morning after Pro’s Day is not an ideal time to play Captain/Pro - Phil McBrown, can you make a note of this please! - as Andy and I took on Dave Ahmad and Brian Smith.

After our customary start of losing the 1st, Andy won back the 2nd, halves at 3 and 4, before we sneaked into the lead at 5, which we duly gave back at 6. My 3 at 7 was only good enough to half Dave’s 4/3 as we eventually crossed the road one down. But the match could go either way as Brian had now joined us on the 10th after a front 9 absence!

12 was halved in nett 4, 13 in 3, my 4 at 14 was good enough to square the match, after 2 great shots from Andy into 15 for a 4/3 was again only good enough for a half before Brian popped up again with a 4/3 at 16 to go 1up with 2 to play. Andy once again split the fairway and hit a 6 iron to 15 feet, he then rolled in the putt for a 3/2 and we were all square playing the last. I hit a 6 iron to 8 feet, Andy was pin high but right of the green, Brian was front edge to a back pin, and Dave was somewhere near the putting green! Dave’s first chip didn’t make the green, but his 2nd found the hole! My 8 footer set off on line, but as the pace slowed it looked to be missing left until it caught the left edge and dropped in the back door for a 2 and a 1up victory!

If you listen very carefully you can still hear sobbing in Barnefield Wood Road coming from the Smith household!
