Captain/Pro The morning after the very successful Take That tribute night, Phil and I took on John Allen and Nigel ‘Willow’ Barber. A bright but frosty frozen course awaited us and it was a case of cross your fingers and pray the ball would behave itself. After pitching my second shot on the green at the first and the ball ending up nearer the 13th than the first due to the frozen ground, it was clear patience would be required! We were quickly behind after Johns 5/4 was good enough to win the 1st, his 4/3 at 3 doubled their lead and it was looking like it was their day to shine, another win at the 4th and we were 3 down and I was getting the feeling this wouldn’t be our greatest day! But a win at 6 started to relight my fire and another at 9 saw us 1 down at the turn and Phil was starting to think could it be magic now! Our win at 10 was quickly cancelled out by Willow’s 4/3 at 11 and we crossed the road 1 down. As we all teed off 12, Willow admitted he felt like he was playing with giants as we all split the fairway, but a win after both Phil and I 3 putted took them 2up. After a quick team talk, Phil said it only takes a minute to get us back in the game, and fortunately after a small mishap from Willow at 13 as he forgot about his shot and picked his ball up, we were back to 1 down! Halves at 14 in 4’s, and fine putt from 10 feet from Willow for a half, my 4 at 16 squared the match with 2 to play. Phil’s 5/4 looked to have won the hole but John holed from 8 feet to take the match to the last, two good shots from Phil and it looked like we were going to rule the world, as John went long and left and Willow short, John 3 putted, Phil and I both missed from 10 feet which left Willow with an 8 foot putt to half the game, which he duly holed and he was certainly happy now! Thanks for a fun morning gents…
