Captain & Pro This week’s challengers were Alfie Hickman and Stuart Williams, and were hoping 4th time lucky after 3 previous defeats, they once again opted for no shots, which we were never going to argue with!
It was a close game most of the way round with a half at the 1st, but 3 putts meant a loss at 2, a half at 3 and 4 saw us 1 down but my 3 at the 5th levelled the match and it was game on.
Alf’s ripped 2 iron at the 6th failed to carry the trap and with Stu tacking down the left side, the door looked a jar but a fine up and down from Stu saw another half. Seven was halved in 4’s before Alf turned up on 8 with a 3 and regained their 1up lead. A half at 9 and 10, but my 3 at 11 saw us cross the road all square, nobody could score better than a 5 at 12 and then Stu rolled one in from 20 feet to take the lead once more at 13. A fine greenside bunker shot from the big fella at 14 and my missed eagle putt from 12 feet meant we were still one down with 4 to play. A 5/4 from Phil squared the match at 15 and my 8 foot putt at 16 kept the match level.
None of us threatened the hole at 17 with our approach shots, but step up The Captain, who holed across the green from 30+ feet for a 4/3 and we took the lead for the first time and the wind out of Alfie’s sails. Phil bunkered his tee shot at 18, I hit an 8 iron to 10 feet, Stu disappeared towards the 12th fairway and Alf took half the tee box with his 9 iron but it finished 15 feet past the flag, his putt slipped by which gave me 2 putts from 10 feet for a narrow 1up victory!
Nice putt Captain!
