Captain/Pro Phil and I played Sean McGowan and Brian Paterson on Sunday 15th, with the course playing fiery, very bouncy and short, length wasn’t going to be an issue, although accuracy would! We were off to a fast start with a win at the 1st from Phil as Sean and Brian both tacked their way up the 12th hole, we then halved a few holes in a row as Sean took the scenic route on several holes. The most scenic was playing the 3rd via the 8th green, and Phil took a breather from his exertion on the 1st but a loss at 6 saw us all square on the 7th tee. Sean once again disappeared down the 6th fairway this time, but a fine fairway wood over the trees saw him 20 feet away in two, Brian reappeared from somewhere near Eden Park Train Station, wedged on to 20 feet and holed for a 4/3 and a 1up lead, this was cancelled out by my 3 at 8 as Sean found it tricky to find a line to the green from the 5th tee box. Halves at 9 and 10 before Sean found the fairway at 11, followed by the back of the green and holed from 30 feet for a winning 3, Brian’s 4/3 at 12 sent them 2 up, at 15, Sean hit his second fairway of the day after a roofed drive, but a self proclaimed fantastic second shot from 240 yards and 2 putts saw them dormie 3 up! A 4 at 16 was good enough to reduce the deficit to 2, Phil appeared again on 17 with a 4/3 to take the match to the 18th and with our opponents in for 3, all I had to do was slot home a simple 5 foot putt for a 2 and to halve the match, you can guess what happened from the grin on McGowan’s face………. A good match, where accuracy wasn’t as important as I first thought! Our next match was the following Sunday against Dominic d’Inverno and Ian Gough, fortunately we caught Dom on a bad day as he had been fed too much alcohol the night before and was a little jaded. We took an early lead, and kept our noses in front nicely as we reached the turn 4up, they briefly looked like they might get themselves back in the match with a win at 11 but was quickly cancelled out with our birdies at 12 and 14 for a 5&4 victory.
The Addington Pro Am
I played at The Addington last week, and if you thought it is dry and bouncy here! Anyway, I was accompanied by LPGC members Gary Tommy, Paul Myers and Russ Thomson and were off to a flyer as we reached the turn in -8, with the bouncy conditions we thought must be in with a shout. Our back 9 slowed somewhat but we still returned a score of -9, but lost out on countback for 5th spot, I had a bogey free round (very rare!) with 2 birdies for 67 and 3rd place, one behind winners Richard Wallis and Chris Rodgers.
