Presidents Platter/Scratch Bowl
Last Sunday saw The Presidents Platter/Scratch Bowl take place, this is the second of the two 36 hole events. A full field turned out on a fine sunny day and after the morning round, Simon Smales led the way in The Plater with a fine nett 64, he was 4 clear of Ian Dawson and Ben Church on nett 68. In the scratch, a level par 69 saw Ben Church in pole position closely followed by Alfie Hickman, Sam Beadle, and Mark Haffenden all on 71.
The afternoon saw some great scores returned, Simon slipped to a nett 74 to give him a 138 total, Alfie shot 69 nett 67 to put him leading both events before Jack O Hare turned his game around on the back 9 holes to shoot 69 nett 64 to go with his morning nett 71 to win the Platter by one shot from Alfie.
The scratch was also a closely fought contest as Ben Church held on to a 70 for a 139 total, pipping Alfie by one and Sam Beadle by 2.

Captain/Pro After a few weeks off, Phil and I played Garry Appleford and Steve Butler on Wednesday afternoon. With Steve receiving 3 shots and Garry getting 11 we knew this would be a tough afternoon, especially as Phil had stupidly got his handicap cut to 8 and was now getting one less shot! A friendly start to the proceedings with a couple of halves before losing the 3rd to a Butler nett 3, a win at 5 and a birdie from Phil at 6 saw us 1up, we suddenly lost 7, 8, and 10 to cross the road 2 down and things didn’t get any better at 12 as Phil had 4 shots and was yet to get over the pond which sent us a further hole down from another Butler nett 3. A halve at 13 and it looked grim, 3 down with 5 to play, My fat hook all of a sudden vanished as I eagled 14, a par at 15 and a birdie at 16 to square the match. Phil’s nett 3 at 17 and a monster 35 foot putt at the last saw us win the last 5 holes and take a 2up victory, from the jaws of defeat!

Ryder Cup
The greatest team event (apart from watching Everton play) will soon be upon us as Europe take on USA in the Ryder Cup at The Paris National at the end of the month. The wild card picks have been announced, fingers crossed we can bring the trophy back to this side of the Atlantic. From now until the end of September, come and play the Ryder Cup venue on the simulator in the shop, a nine hole stableford competition will take place, £5 entry winner takes all!

Gapping is vitally important to any golfer. Being able to pick a club out of the bag and knowing exactly how far you can strike the ball will make for more confident shots, as you won’t be constantly wondering if you should club up or club down. |
Not just for wedges Gapping is often associated with the shorter clubs in your bag, but it's just as important to make sure you pay attention to the gaps between your longer clubs, too. Good gapping would see you have equal gaps between clubs that are no bigger than 15 yards, as displayed in the green illustration below. In contrast, bad gapping would leave you with uneven or large distances between clubs, often over 20 yards or under 10. Having equal gaps throughout your bag will mean you are much closer with your next club, so you won’t have to manufacture shorter/longer swings or hit soft/hard shots, which is where a lot of problems begin. |
Being able to know exactly how far each club goes can be even more helpful if you have a GPS device telling you the exact distance between your ball and the pin. So if you're still guessing how far you hit each club, come and speak to a member of the team. We can guarantee it's costing you shots. |
