Captain & Pro Bernie and I took on the formidable pairing of Stuart Williams and Max Jordan last Sunday, Max was keen to get his first win under his belt as a Professional.
With very few shots to give, except for my partner who received 17, and Stuart getting 4, we were off to steady start with halves at the first 3 holes as Stu kept his side in the game. My 3 at the 4th took us 1 up, Bernie’s 4/3 at 6 took us 2 up, Stu’s 4/3 at 7 gave them hope and took the game back to 1up.
Bernie made great use of his shots around the turn with a 4/3 at 9 and a 3/2 at 11 took us 3up across the road. A 4/3 from Stu at 12 was good enough to get one back, Max eventually arrived on 14 as Stu could only make 5, as he got up and down from somewhere near the fountain for a 4, my eagle putt just slipped past so we were 2up with 4 to go. Halves at 15, and a fine 3 from Stu at 16 clawed the game back to 1 and he also received a shot on 17, so the match was getting tight. That was until he hooked his tee shot into the ditch and had to drop out, Bernie made a fine 5/4 after his drive looked like it was leaking out of bounds until a fortuitous bounce from a friendly tree, Max could only make par after his huge drive left him a with 100 yards to go but a wayward wedge shot only just hit the green with no chance of a birdie.
So 1up playing the last, Max pulled another iron shot long and left, Stu hit a great shot to 10 feet, Bernie’s 6 iron was right down the flag but half a club long, my 7 iron was 15 feet left. Max missed, Bernie 2 putted for 3, I left my putt short in the jaws and Stu’s putt slipped past on the right hand side to leave us with a 1up win!
