Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, from what can only be described as a sun baked Langley Park! It is quite remarkable temperatures for February, which has seen people out in short sleeves and shorts! I know it’s about to change but it definitely give us a head start with January and February being as dry as this. Enjoy the read!

Fog stops play… As good as the weather has been, we unfortunately had to cancel last Saturdays 5 Club competition as thick fog lingered far too long and tee times were delayed so much that the afternoon players would be unable to complete their round. The Ladies were out in force on Tuesday for their Florida Scramble team event. Leading the way with 72.5 was the team of Ros Cox, Julia Price, and Diana Roberts. They were 4 shots clear of second placed Catherine Loddo, Pam Smith and Pat Stubbs with the team of Jill Salway, Diana Stotesbury and Mary Forrest taking 3rd place.

Captain & Pro Bernie and I have had a couple of matches to report on. We played Andrew Riddles and Fred Pett two weeks ago, and with Andrew struggling to keep is ball in the BR postcode, things were going our way nicely early on. Bernie then put in a nice run of nett birdies around the turn and we crossed the road 3up. He looked to have sewn the match up as his tee shot on 13 ended 10 feet from the hole with a shot, Fred made him work a little as he holed from 15 feet for a 2, Bernie had a rush of blood and knocked his birdie putt 2 feet past, an electric shot passed through his fingers for the return putt and all of a sudden we were only 2 up! Birdies for Fred and Andrew at the next two all of a sudden squared the game, my 3 won 16 but their nett 3 won 17 so all square on the last, fortunately they could only manage a 4 so my 3 managed to sneak a 1up win. Last Sunday we were challenged by the Irish contigent of Oisin Kelly and Kieran McClaffery, both receiving 12 shots for a tough match. During the first few holes there was not much in it as a 1up lead was won and lost, we managed to sneak ahead again at the 6th after Oisin looked to be in pole position with a shot and being on the fringe in 2/1, he was still on the fringe for 3/2 and then somewhere near the school hockey pitch for 4/3! My birdie at 8 took us 2 up and as we entered Bernies corner, the Captain made 4/3 at 9 – 3up, 3/2 at 10 - 3up, 3/2 at 11 – 4up, my 4 at 12 saw us 5up and and 3 at 13 was good enough to shake hands for a very early bath.

New stock in… Lots of deliveries this week, including some new Langley Park Logo shirts and with the warm weather, these have been attracting some attention. A new range of LPGC logo brassware, including hat clips, poker chip markers, variuos coloured ball markers and magnetic pitch forks. A new selection of shoes from Ecco and Under Armour, all of which are leather, waterproof and spikeless. The Ecco shoes are Goretex lined and one has the new BOA system for laces, the Under Armour is a great value shoe for £109 in the two colours pictured. |

Tiger’s bunker shot… Did you see the amazing shot by Tiger Woods in last weekend’s World Golf Championship form Mexico? It was quite spectacular and very Tiger Woods like! Anyway, I then saw a swing sequence of the shot and I knew I’d seen that move somewhere before. It just goes to show Alan Brooks is way ahead of Tiger! Click here to see Tiger’ bunker shot.

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Callaway We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Callaway’s Mack Daddy 4 wedge. Its new Groove-In-Groove technology provides brilliant control and spin no matter if you're playing from the rough or the fairway, whilst 21 loft-bounce combinations give us a fantastic array of options to pick from when finding you the perfect set-up to improve your wedge play. |
