Recent results… It’s been a contrasting month to 12 months ago, in 2018 we didn’t get a drop of rain all month, but this year we’ve had a month’s rainfall in one day. However it was what was needed and the course has been transformed in a matter of weeks. The course has been very busy the last couple of weeks, hosting several internal and external events with some great performances from some of our members. On Monday 17th June we hosted the PGA in South Assistants Championships, with 78 assistant professionals from all over the South of England playing 36 holes. After Round one, Sam Boyes (Meon Valley) had the lead with a 67 (-2), he led by one from Ryan Boyns (Weald of Kent) 68(-1) and by two from Alex White (The Wisley) 69 (E). Langley’s Tom Jordan was close behind after a morning 71. Round 2 saw the leader falter with a 76, Ryan Boyns added 70 to his morning 68, James Ford (Silvermere) added 68 to his morning score of 70 to tie for the lead. Tom improved on his morning score and added 69 to his 71 to fall 2 shots shy of the play off between James Ford and Ryan Boyns, with James becoming the Champion at the first extra hole. Tom’s solid performance earning him a very commendable 3rd place.

The following day saw Lady Captains Day take place. A great turnout of 51 ladies took to the course on another day of sunshine and showers. Priya Bhatia took the podium top spot with 36 points, she was 2 clear of Kiran Bowry on 34, with Lesley Compton, Ann Greatorex, Pam Smith, and Evelyn Butler all scoring 33. Well done to Monica for hoisting such a fantastic day.
The next day at the club saw Langley Park host The Association of Kent Veterans, with 80 plus players taking part from all over the county. Congratulations to Langley Park’s John Cranstoun, who’s score of 34 points was good enough to win The Kent Vets Saga Cup.

Captain & Pro Challenge Bernie and I played Brian Smith and Neil Todd the morning after the summer ball, I’m not sure whose idea that was? A slightly delayed tee time was in order as one of our opponents struggled to wake up, but we eventually teed off at 9.30. A few early wins and we were soon 2up, a sandy par from Bernie at the 6th took us 3up and looking comfortable. Snap hook Todd arrived on the 7th as his previous 6 drives had all nosedived to the left, the tequila he had tried to ply me with the night before was wearing off as he boomed one down the fairway and a 5/4 was good enough for the win. After a few more halves, we crossed the road 2up! A win at 12 saw us 3up and sitting pretty, before losing 14 to a nett 4, it looked like we would almost tie things up at 15 as Bernie was 25ft for 3/2 and Brian was 30ft for 4/3, Brian then holed, Bernie knocked his 4 feet by and had to hole that for a knee knocking half! Hole 16 was halved so we went to the 17th dormie 2up, 4 good drives followed by Neil’s fine approach to 20 feet, and a 2 putt for 4/3 won the hole as my 15ft birdie putt slid away to the right. There were 4 good shots into 18 as well, Brian just past pin hi left, Neil 20ft past the flag, Bernie on the fringe (with a shot!) and mine 3ft from the hole, fortunately everyone missed making my 3 footer much easier for a 2up win!
Open Championship Qualifying The regional qualifying for this year’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush took place on Monday, Tom Jordan, Max Jordan and I were drawn at Wildernesse, while George Mullins was drawn at Burhill. |
At Wildernesse, there were 13 places to play for from the 118 entries, Tom was the first of us to tee off and he returned a score of 74 (+2). Max was next and he returned 73 (+1), and I teed off at 1pm and after a flying start, and a wobble in the middle, clung on by my finger nails to shoot 71 (-1). A total of 11 players returned a score of -2 or better meaning the 9 players on 71 would play off for the 2 remaining places. I went out at the second extra hole after making 2 pars, one player birdied the first and another birdied the second to qualify. At Burhill, 113 players took part with 10 spots available. There was some great scoring as 3 players lead with -7, George shot a fantastic -2, which on most years would qualify comfortably but he sadly missed the playoff by one shot.

Is there a better time than summer to be out playing golf? Silly question, really. So, now you’ve got your cap on and you’re lathered in sun lotion, it’s time to make sure the most important part of your body (arguably) is protected: your eyes. |
