Good afternoon everyone,
Sit down and make yourself comfortable as this may take a while!
Lots to report this week and it seems to be a week for the seniors, with county honours, interclub victory and a surprise Founders Cup winner!
The Kent Seniors Handicap Championship took place at Gillingham, and taking the honours pictured looking delighted was Langley Parks Ian Betts with a fine nett 66 to win by 2 shots. Well played Ian.
The Langley Park Vets played their first league match of the season away to Sundridge Park on the West Course, the team put in a fine performance in a very hard fought match to win the match 4-2 with wins coming from John Newton/Gordon Hayward, Bill Mewis/Ken Evans, debutant Peter Battle and John Sowden, and Phillip Littlewood and another new boy David Peach.
So, feeling victorious, the team then headed for another away match against Cherry Lodge, and yet again another fine away performance with wins coming from Malongone/Synott, Battle/Sowden, Davison/Peach and Evans/Cullum for a 4-2 victory once again.
Last weekend saw the 36 hole Club Shield (scratch) and Founders Cup (handicap) played on a very warm but slightly windy Sunday. The morning around saw Mark Haffenden lead the Shield after a solid 70, closely followed by Tom Jordan, 72 and George Mullins, 73. In the Founders Cup the surprise halfway leader was Mick Proffitt with nett 68, just ahead of Rob Norris, Mark Haffenden and David Pain, each with 71. In the afternoon a few tired legs started to appear, not for Tom Jordan though, starting at the 12th he holed his 2nd shot into 17 and holed a bunker shot on 18 to be -3 after 7. A couple of bogeys from holes 1-11 saw Tom return a fine gross 68 to win by 5 from George Mullins, 145 and Mark Haffenden, 148.
Meanwhile in the shield, Mick Proffitt's sportsmans lunch of 7 Peroni's seemed to be having the wrong effect as shots started to be frittered away, fortunately he managed to hold his nerve to shoot a nett 75 to pip Tom Jordan, Tobin Dymock, and Declan Lennox by one shot.
The ladies played their Spring Meeting on Tuesday in what looked to be a lovely sunny day. In Div 1 Lesley Compton edged out Tereza Russo and Barbara Malangone on countback. In Div 2 the runaway winner with a nett 67 was Julie Allen beating 2nd placed Josee Gray by 7 shots into 2nd and Mary Forrest a further 3 shots back on nett 77. In Div 3 Tina Gardner took the honours on count back from Shelia Burn with Nett 77.
While most of the ladies were having lunch, clouds gathered and thunder rumbled around so play was suspended for 20 minutes while it passed. Once everyone had teed off the heavens opened with hail and the afternoon 9 hole event was called off.
The Juniors played their May Stroke last weekend, leading the way with a fine nett 69 was Dave Lincoln, closely followed by Jack Hooper with nett 70 and E Murphy nett 71. Oscar Beman-Browne was the runaway winner in Division 2 with a 10 under par nett 59!
Assistant/Vice-Captain Challenge
Vice-Captain, Peter Kilford and Assistant Nick took on Steve Butler and Garry Appleford, in a close game, Vice and Assistant came out on top winning 2&1. A fine performance from Nick, shooting 69 in a hard fought match.
