Good afternoon all,
I hope you have all been getting out and making the most of a great weeks weather, another major has come and gone, whilst it may not have been the best looking course I've ever seen, it certainly provided a very entertaining US Open, Jordan Spieth certainly looks like he will be challenging for majors for some time, and is on the Grand Slam, now that would be some achievement at 21 years old!
Talking of Major Championships, there were five of us from Langley Park trying to qualify for The Open Championship this week, the regional qualifier was held at Wildernesse on Monday, myself, George Mullins, Tom and Max Jordan, and Josh Waters were all trying for a top eight spot to move on to the final qualifying stage.
From previous experiences (about 25 at my last count!) level par is never far away from the qualifying score, I was level after nine, but three bogies and only one birdie on the back nine meant +2 wasn't going to get me any further, Max and Josh both played early in the day, Josh returning 77 and Max not having one of his better days. George was next to finish, a bad front nine meant he was needing a very low second half to have a chance, three birdies at 10, 11and 12 gave him a chance but eventually returned 78 (+6). So all LPGC's hopes lay on Toms shoulders, a solid front nine left him in with a good chance, by now, looking at the scores 71 (-1) or better would qualify; 72 (level) would play off. Tom stood on 16 -1, an unfortunate double bogey left him with a lot to do, but a birdie at 17 and 18 saw him return 71 and finish in a tie for 3rd place. Tom now qualifies to the next stage which is Tuesday next week at Woburn, the top three from the 36 hole event there will qualify for The Open Championship.
You can see Toms draw here.
June Stroke
Last Saturday saw the June stroke played, a very full field as you would expect at the height of the season, saw the lowest scoring of the year so far. In Division One, George Peniston took the top honours with a fantastic 75 nett 64, three clear of Les Clarke, 78 nett 67 and Steve Butler 70 nett 67. In Division Two, Ian Gough led the way with 85 nett 66 followed by Ettore Landi 95 nett 68 and Alan Peck 91 nett 70 in third.
Alan and I were challenged by Kanti Shah and Homi Mehta last Sunday, and as always we were expecting a tough ride from these two. Unfortunately for them, the ride turned out to be anything but tough......
We were off to a fast start, with a win at 1,3,4,5 & 6 at which point Kanti offered to stop the fight and buy us all lunch instead! Further wins at 9, 10 and 11 saw us shake hands and not need to cross the road!
Caption Competiton
I'm sure you all have something to say about these three fine looking gents. Captions sent here as always please.
Langley Park assistant Nick Stewart played his first assistants order of merit event this week at Linfield Golf Club. In the Golf College Challenge, Tom and Max Jordan were also playing as this is the college they attend, 84 players teed up for the 36 hole event, after round one 67 (-1) was leading with Tom shooting 71, Nick 72 Max 81, in the afternoon Max shot 76 for 157, Tom shot 70 for 141, and Nick shooting his lowest score of the season so far a 67 for 139 and a share of second place.
