Good afternoon all
A very good week at the club with lots of success and good performances to report, also for the first time in many years, I actually managed to stay awake for completion of The US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, a great golfing spectacle and a result that most golf fans would have been pleased to see, Jason Day, after several years of near misses managed to shake the monkey from his back, hold off the challenge of Jordan Spieth and win his first major in impressive style and also becoming the first player to shoot 20 under in a major Championship.
Last Sunday saw the Abbiss Cup played for, a betterball event played against par in the old bogey format, leading the way and winning by a considerable margin was Simon Hurry and Alan Simmons with a fantastic score of +9, this was 4 clear of Andy Jani and Simon Mason with +5. They were closely followed by Brian Smith and Garry Tommy. I've seen the scorecard and all I can say is, Alan, make the most of your current handicap......................
LPGC also played their Perman Shield match last weekend at home to Mid Kent, after the morning foursomes, wins for Nathan Brown/Alfie Hickman, Kent Osborn/George Mullins and a half from Conor Byers and Steve Butler saw the home side lead 2 1/2-1 1/2, in the afternoon singles, Tom Jordan and Mark Haffenden managed halves before George Mullins, Alfie Hickman (birdie, Birdie finish to win 1up), Max Jordan and Conor Byers all won their matches for the home side to win the match 8-4.
The Langley Vets have been flying high recently in the Kent League, and need to win 2 out of the final 3 matches to win the league, after a few 3-3 halved matches, the pairing were changed around for the home visit against Sundridge Park, LPGC were fast out of the blocks winning the first four matches and halving the sixth for an impressive 4 1/2 -1 1/2 victory, the next match was also at home against Cherry Lodge, with LPGC only needing 1 point to win the division, we took one win from the first 3 games but then won all of the last 3 games for another fine 4-2 victory and the division title secured with one match to play. Well played gents, a great performance over the season
The Ladies were out on Tuesday for The Past Captains Trophy Stableford competition, a great result for Kim Wildman (after a few mot sessions on the practice ground over the past few weeks) with a fine 39 points after only scoring 1 point in the first 2 holes! She was 3 points clear of Sarah Miller with Sue Williams and Tereza Russo. In Division 2, Roz Galley destroyed the field with a tremendous 44 points, 10 points clear of 2nd placed Ros Cox and Alison Dunkley. Kim has now reduced her handicap to 12.6 and Roz is now down to 24.7, well done ladies.
Alan and I played Captain/Pro this week against John Newton and John Sowden, a rearranged game from the rain abandoned one a few weeks ago, a close match from the off with John winning the 1st with a 4, we halved the next 5 in par and then my 3 matched Johns 4 nett 3 at 7 my 3 at eight levelled the match, we snuck ahead at 11 and then halved 12 and 13 in par and 14 in birdie, John then nett birdied 15 and John net birdied 16 for a halve and 17 for a win, and halve at the last saw John and John win one up ! our first defeat of the year.........
