Good Afternoon all
Thankfully the tail end of the week is far better than the start, a rain soaked Monday and torrential Tuesday saw the Ladies Autumn meeting postponed, and the duck pond reappear!
Plenty to tell you about this week, plus a reminder that next Sunday, 4th October is Captains Drive in, following the completion of The Victory Cup, Peter Kilford will be driving in at 1pm, followed by drinks and canopies in the clubhouse.
Midweek Stroke
The September midweek stroke play was held On Thursday 17th September. No two's were had this week, and the CSS went up to 73! No easy conditions this week. The results were:
1st: D Harris (73) won on countback
2nd: R. Fishwick (73)
3rd: J. Flesher (74)
Royal Blackheath Trophy
The first of 2 team events over the weekend, the Royal Blackheath trophy was played on Saturday 19th September. The format was Greensomes, so both members of the team tee off, the best one is selected, and then alternate shot is played from there. The results were:
1st: I. Baker/N. Higgins (35 points) on countback
2nd: S. Cullum/M. Sparrow (35 points)
3rd: R. Carter/L. Nelson (34 points)
Littlehails Platter
The littlehails platter was played on Sunday 20th September, a friendly family competition, in the format of foursomes, so the pressure was on! The results were as follows:
1st: Mrs L. Compton/F. Compton (33 points)
2nd: G. Williamson/J. Williamson (31 points)
This week the ladies were due to have their autumn meeting, but unfortunately due to a constant downpour of rain Monday evening and on Tuesday, it was cancelled.
Mixed Knockout
Alan and Mari Brooks took on Dave Allen and Diana Roberts on a rain soaked Monday afternoon, so much so I think they had the course to themselves, a very close match which could have gone either way saw Alan and Mari take the honours winning 1up.
Well done to all those that took part in this week's competitions.
Only a few more weeks of Captain Alan's term, but still plenty of time to cram a few more challenge matches, on Saturday we took on past captain Kevin Walder and Chairman Dave Lennox, Alan had given strict instructions for a fast start, as his jet lag had left in in the wrong time zone and wasn't feeling at his sharpest, but a Par, birdie, nett birdie, nett birdie, par start, saw us 4up and any jet lag had soon disappeared, a somewhat fortuitous half at 7 after Alan holed from 35feet from back right to front left to sneak a half, much to Kevin Walders delight (not), kept us nicely in front, and we crossed the road still 4 ahead, a loss at 12 but a win at 15 saw us shake hands 4&3.
On Sunday we had a delayed start after Captains night, due to a few hazy heads for our match with Shaun McGowan and Alan Brooks, once again we were fast out the blocks and quickly into a 3up lead and seemed to be going the same way as the previous match, but some solid putting from Shaun and a steady performance from Alan B (this is not a typo) saw our lead slip and suddenly stood on 15 all square, Alan B made 4/3 to take a one up lead and with shots at 16 and 17 things looked bleak, even more so when Alan B hit his 2nd to 20 feet, Shaun backed him up with a solid 4, a small rush of blood saw Alan go 3ft past, I holed from 6ft for 3, Alan missed, Shaun's face dropped and all square again !
We halved 17 after Shaun took a detour down the Avenue with a couple of shots hugging the right side, Alan B made 5/4 to halve my 4, so A/S with 18 to go, Alan P and I both hit the green, Shaun went long And Alan B left, we looked to be sneaked victory from the jaws of defeat, even more so when Shaun left his chip 10ft short and Alan B 8ft past, we both 2 putted for 3's only to see Shaun hole (again) for a halved and very enjoyable match!
