Victory cup
On Sunday, 4 October a big field took part in the Victory Cup, and although the course was playing tough, some tremendous scores were recorded in this foursomes format.
The results were:
1st - Dean White/Keith Stacey (64.5), 2nd - Alan Simmons/Simon Hurry (67.5) amd 3rd - Kieran Vincent/Stuart Williams (70)
October Stableford
On Thursday, 1 October, 13 people took to the course to play the October stableford in not very nice conditions.
The results were as follows:
1st - H D Smith (31 points), 2nd - P J Humphrey (28 points) and 3rd - M Stockford (28 points).
Kent Group Winners Championship
On Thursday, 1 October the Vet's team travelled to Boughton Park Golf Club, where they would compete in the group winner's championship. Well done to the team as we managed to finish 3rd overall and only 4 points off first spot.
The vets league captain Mr Gordon Hayward had nothing but praise for the team and said this:
"Today was the Kent Group Winner's Championship held at Boughton Park Golf Club. This course is not known to most of us but is 6591 yards long on the card but with two holes extended and all 18 pin positions in the back half played over 6700 yards. The other group winners were, against whom we played, were: Boughton, Broome Park, Eltham Warren, Kings Hill, Nizels, Tenterden, and Widernesse.
With five pairs from each club playing aggregate, Stableford, better ball, off 3/4 handicap we came 3rd with 157 points and the winner was the home club Boughton Park with 161. A very close run contest but special mention must go to Peter Battle who played brilliantly, according to all reports, and Joe Rowlinson who contributed 41 points. Well done to all the team of John Newton, Gordon Hayward, Bill Mewis, Ken Evans, Peter Battle, Joe Rowlinson, Peter Killick, David Peach, Richard Carter and Stuart Cullum, who had a most enjoyable although unrewarding day."
Captain / Pro Challenge
Myself and Alan played our penultimate Captain/Pro match last week against Phil McBrown and David Pain, we were off to our usual decent start but this time found ourselves 1 down after 6, a chip-in from David at 7 for a half saw them maintain their lead, until we won 8 and 9 to lead at the turn 1up, Phil then birdied 10 and 11, and David nett birdied 12, he then holed from the bunker at 13 for a 2 and all of a sudden we lost 4 holes in a row and were 3 down! A great 4 from Alan at 14 and halves at 15 and 16 put us dormie 2 down, but 17 was looking good as David was struggling for 4, I was 25 feet for 2, and Phil has just thinned out of the front trap to somewhere near the lake for 3, he then proceeded to lob it on the green to 20 feet and hole for 5 nett 4. My putt slipped by and the challengers took the spoils 2&1, only our 2nd defeat of the year.
Last weekend in our final match we played incoming Captain Peter Kilford and Rob Norris, in a closely fought match which plenty of birdies and nett birdies flying around, unfortunately Alan and I were unable to sign off in style, (plus he had told me it wasn't the best idea to beat the incoming Captain) so we eventually lost on the last hole 1 down.
I would like to say a big thank you to Alan for all of his support and the matches we have played this year, we played 21 won 15 halved 2 and lost 4, each one was great fun and always hotly contested!
The list is now on the board to challenge Peter and myself, get your names down fast as the dates always fill up quickly.
Littlestone Pro Am
Peter Kilford, Andy Craig, Paul Connell and myself played at Littlestone on Saturday, 26 September, in their Charity Pro Am, fortunately the sun shone, with a gentle breeze made the course very playable. I managed one of my better days for quite some time, with 6 birdies in the first 12 holes, a bogey at 16 and an eagle on 18 for a very pleasing 64 (-7) and a win in the professional event by four shots. In the team competition, we managed -10 to take 5th place in the team event with Peter also winning nearest the pin at the 17th.
