Good afternoon from a slight damp LPGC, there is not many out there this afternoon except for some very keen ladies playing against Cherry Lodge, but they are out numbered by an even larger amount of geese and ducks!
Still that said, it's still very warm and although this week's wind may have played havoc with leaf collection, the course has been very playable, temperatures are however due to change this weekend and drop to only 3 or 4 degrees, so get the woolly hats and mittens at the ready !
Last weekend saw the Fletcher Cup played, this is a foursomes event, played off scratch with a combined team from the club and the artisans, verses Royal Blackheath and Sundridge Park. Langley Park defended their title and won both the team and the individual event, congratulations to all who turned out to play.
Ladies Turkey Trot
The ladies were also out in force on Tuesday, playing a turkey trot. 34 players battled high winds and later in the day several heavy showers, but ignoring the testing conditions, Ros Cox returned a very creditable score of 35 points to beat Evelyn Collington on countback, with Angela Darby 4 points further back in 3rd place with 31.
Pete and I played our second game of the campaign against Dave '21 shots' Paterson and Sean 'one more' McGowan. Things took a turn for the worst very early on as we lost the 1st to Dave's 5/4, he then made 4/3 at the 2nd and 5/4 at the 3rd, 3 down after 3, Pete and I both rubbed the sleep from our eyes and disbelief from our faces as we managed to win 4,5,7,8,9, to turn 2up, a two from yours truly at 10, forced Dave to 3 putt as he also wondered when his partner was likely to join him, as if by magic, Sean appeared, trying swing number 23 to halve the 11th, but unfortunately the next few swings were as equally unsuccessful as the previous 22 and Dave was left with sore shoulders once more ! Dave's 3/2 at 13 cancelled out our win at 12, but fours at 14 and 15 were good enough for Pete and I to take the spoils 4&3!
Finding a few extra yards…
You've probably noticed that your best drive isn't quite travelling as far in the air as it was a few months back. Don't worry, you're not losing your power, that's what happens when the air is cooler and fairways are softer.
To squeeze a few extra yards out of your drives during the winter, try these three tips:
1. Tee your ball a little higher and move it forward in your stance to encourage an upward angle of attack, therefore adding loft.
2. Grip the club a little lighter than usual, which will help your wrists hinge more easily for a steeper angle of attack to promote a higher flight.
3. Load more weight onto your right side than usual, which also creates a steeper swing for longer carries.
Give this a go and let us know how you get on, and if you want help with any aspect of your game, don't hesitate to speak to us about a lesson or two. Get in touch here.
